Namun, Joachim Loew bisa membawa Der Panzer secara pelan tapi pasti menembus setiap tantangan yang dihadapinya. Sempat kalah dari Kroasia di babak penyisihan Grup B, Jerman akhirnya maju ke perempat final setelah pada laga pamungkas fase grup menang 1-0 atas tuan ruman Austria. Di babak delapan besar, di luar dugaan Loew memasang strategi dan taktik menyerang yang membuat Portugal kelabakan. Tak heran, Jerman berhasil membuat dua gol lebih dulu untuk mengendalikan permainan dan akhirnya menang 3-2. Di semifinal, Loew lagi-lagi mampu membangkitkan semangat pasukannya untuk mengatasi permainan tak kenal lelah yang diperlihatkan Turki. Kejar-mengejar skor pun terjadi, namun mental juara Jerman yang berbicara sehingga bisa memenangkan duel ketat dan sengit itu dengan skor 3-2. Partai final menjadi anti-klimaks Der Panzer.
